My Breathwork Journey

When I left my high-paying corporate job in 2021 to start a coaching business, I felt like I was riding an exciting, yet risky and challenging wave. The monthly paycheck was gone. The title I spent years working towards—gone. But I felt a strong calling toward something deep in my heart. So when you feel a call, you answer it. I went ALL IN with trust that it would work out. I still feel like I’m on that wave, but at the same time, I’ve never felt more grounded and at peace.
Breathwork was, and still is, a huge rock of support in maintaining this feeling. Even though I had been practicing meditation since 2012, breathwork opened up a whole new level of awareness. Not only did it give me clarity in complex problems, but it also cleared the negative energy that built up under the pressures of life and work. It resets me. It’s a fresh start. A renewal. I walk away ready to tackle challenges with focus, creativity, and calm.
The personal benefits were too profound to keep to myself. My purpose in starting my original business was to guide professionals who felt held back by confidence, uncertainty, fear, anxiety, stress, self-doubt, and overwhelm. While coaching is a powerful tool for overcoming these blockers and unlocking your potential, breathwork offers a different dimension of transformation beyond the cognitive. I trained as a breathwork facilitator to complement my mindset coaching business, combining the cognitive with the emotional, the physiological with the spiritual, and the mind with the body.
To explain the effects of this specific type of breathwork in words is impossible. To fully understand, you have to experience it, so I invite you to. If you resonate with this and are curious, that’s enough to take the step and book a session.

What Happens During Breathwork?
Breathwork is a dynamic practice that has been shown to have profound benefits for a person’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Scientific studies have shown that daily breathwork practice can improve mood and reduce anxiety by activating the parasympathetic nervous system.
Practitioners often report clearer thinking, emotional release and improved energy levels. And countless personal testimonials speak to its transformative effects on the body and mind as it connects the cognitive with the emotional, and the physiological with spiritual.
Breathwork involves conscious control of the breath to achieve altered levels of consciousness. As you begin to breathe in a specific rhythm, you’ll begin to notice changes in how your body feels.
As you breathe, oxygen levels increase and carbon dioxide levels drop triggering a shift in brain activity. This change activates your parasympathetic nervous system, calming the mind and reducing stress, allowing you to enter a deep state of relaxation.
Simultaneously, the brain’s Default Mode Network (DMN) quiets. The DMN is a brain mechanism that drives the ego and habitual thought patterns, as this quiets it creates a mental stillness that allows you to move away from ego-driven thinking, and access a deeper state of awareness and create space for clarity and insight.
Breathwork also stimulates the release of powerful hormones in the body, such as:
-
Dopamine which boosts motivation
-
Oxytocin which helps to create a sense of bonding and connection
-
Serotonin which is a mood enhancer
-
Endorphins which induce feelings of euphoria and help to relieve pain
The release of these hormones helps to boost your body’s emotional and physical state to create a greater sense of overall well-being.
As you continue breathing, your brain increases theta waves. Theta waves are linked to creativity and intuition and help to unlock non-conscious material and this shift in activity allows different regions of the brain to connect at the same time. This can help bring about sudden insights and realisations or uncover links we may have overlooked.
While the experience may be intense, the changes are natural. And after a session, your body returns to homeostasis - a balanced state where you feel centred, clear and renewed.
What is the Difference Between Breathwork and Meditation?
Meditation and breathwork are both powerful mindfulness practices that can help to reduce stress and promote mental, emotional and physical well-being. While both can complement each other, they both have their own unique benefits.
In essence, meditation is about stillness and awareness, while breathwork is about mindful action harnessing the breath to create changes in both body and mind.
Meditation is a practice of focusing attention and thoughts on the present moment. During meditation, practitioners typically quiet the mind and observe thoughts and emotions without attachment or judgement.
Meditation encourages stillness and mindfulness, helping to calm the mind, reduce stress and improve mental well-being. There are many different types of guided and unguided meditation, such as mindfulness meditation, focused meditation and transcendental meditation.
Breathwork, on the other hand, involves conscious controlling or manipulating the breath to activate specific physiological responses in the body. The aim is often to stimulate or calm the nervous system in order to release trapped emotions, alleviate stress, focus the mind and access our own self-healing power.
Breathwork has been practiced for thousands of years across many different cultures and can help you connect more deeply with yourself. It is more dynamic than traditional meditation and can help people reach altered states of consciousness where they can heal past-traumas, stress, anxiety; and connect with purpose and creativity.
Popular types of breathwork include Holotropic® breathwork, Pranayama breathing and circular breathing.
